Ferris State's Till Von Winning Advances To Singles Semis At ITA Regional Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis squad continued action at the 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships on Saturday (Sept. 17) in Indianapolis.

The Bulldogs were led by sophomore Till von Winning, who upset the second-seeded player in Indianapolis' Nils Hoffacker by a 6-1, 6-4 score to advance into the semifinals of the singles draw. Von Winning, seeded fifth will next battle sixth-seeded Christoph Drechsler of UIndy in Sunday's semifinals with a spot in the afternoon title match on the line.

In doubles action, von Winning paired up with Steward Sell to win their second match of the tournament by an 8-3 score on Saturday morning before falling in the quarterfinals by a narrow 8-6 count.

The annual ITA regional championships features individual-based competition in both singles and doubles play across various flights. The winners of both the top men's singles and doubles divisions receive berths into the National Small College Championships later this year.

Overall, von Winning is now 3-0 in singles play as he posted a pair of wins on Friday during first day action. Sell went 1-1 in the singles round while together the duo finished 2-1 in doubles play. Newcomer Pablo Munoz Baroja also went 1-1 in singles competition before bowing out of the tournament.
