Ferris State's Till von Winning Caps Off Big Weekend With Runner-Up Finish At ITA Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - Sophomore Till von Winning capped off a strong weekend of action with a runner-up finish in singles play at the 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships held in Indianapolis.

Von Winning, seeded fifth in the draw, won his semifinal match on the final day of the regional event with a 7-6 (8), 6-4 win over Indianapolis' sixth-seeded Christoph Drechsler.

In the championship match, von Winning fell to top-seeded Maxi Hepp of Drury (Mo.) 6-4, 6-2 as his dramatic run came to an end in the title showdown.

The Bulldog standout closed the tournament with a 4-1 overall record in finishing as the singles runner-up.

Von Winning previously upset the second-seeded player in Indianapolis' Nils Hoffacker by a 6-1, 6-4 score on Saturday to advance into the semifinals of the singles draw.

The ITA Regional Championships are an individual-based competition that feature the top singles and doubles players from across the region on an annual basis.

Along with von Winning, FSU's Steward Sell also competed in singles action and went 1-1 overall while together the duo finished 2-1 in doubles play and reached the quarterfinals over the weekend. Newcomer Pablo Munoz Baroja also went 1-1 in singles competition before bowing out of the tournament.

Ferris State next hosts its own Bulldog Invitational this weekend (Sept. 23-24) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids.
