Ferris State Men's Tennis Wins Showdown Of Region's Top Two Teams In Exciting Finish
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team pulled out an exciting 5-4 triumph over regional rival Indianapolis on Friday (Feb. 24) as the Bulldogs won their first major test of the year at FSU's Racquet and Fitness Center.
The match pitted the region's top two teams as the top-ranked Bulldogs got by the second-ranked Greyhounds in a thrilling finish to improve to 3-0 on the year.
Ferris State bolted out to a 3-0 edge in the match as FSU swept the doubles round with convincing wins of 8-6, 8-4 and 8-3 in the three flights, respectively.
However, Indianapolis battled back and took a 4-3 lead in the match after winning the first four completed singles matches at the top four spots in the lineup. The four wins included a pair of three-set victories at the second and third flights.
The Bulldogs then rallied to force the tie as Daniil Tarantinov pulled out a 6-3, 6-3 win at five singles. That setup the clincher with FSU's Pablo Munoz Baroja notching a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the final sixth spot to lift the Bulldogs to the win.
Ferris State utilized seven different players in the match which featured a pair of nationally-ranked teams in the 20th-ranked Bulldogs and the 29th-ranked Greyhounds.
Friday's match opened a three-match weekend homestand for the Bulldogs, who are next slated to open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action at home on Saturday (Feb. 25) versus the Findlay Oilers at 12 p.m. (ET).
After Saturday's league-opening tilt, the Bulldogs then host Hillsdale on Sunday (Feb. 26) with another 12 p.m. (ET) start at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.
