Ferris State Captures Fourth-Straight GLIAC Regular Season Tennis Championship

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team officially claimed its fourth-straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Regular-Season Championship as FSU stayed unbeaten in league play with an impressive 7-2 win over Davenport on Wednesday (April 11) night in a first-place showdown inside the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.
The Bulldogs, who are now ranked 21st nationally, swept the Panthers in doubles play and then managed to win four of the six singles flights in the regular-season home finale while improving to 17-2 overall and a perfect 7-0 in league action.
The win was FSU's 14th in a row this year with one regular-season match remaining at Purdue Northwest on Friday (April 13) morning. With Wednesday night's win, the Bulldogs are now two matches in front of DU with one match left. Northwood is the only remaining team with a single league loss behind FSU's unblemished record, but the Bulldogs beat the Timberwolves earlier this season.
Three years ago, in 2015, Ferris State had won its first league regular-season championship since 1999 and first outright crown since 1994. The Bulldogs then repeated the feat each of the past two years before this season. With this year's championship, the men's tennis squad joined the FSU women's volleyball team and men's basketball squad in capturing a fourth-straight league regular-season and/or tournament title.
Prior to the current four-year stretch, Northwood had won the previous 20 regular-season crowns in a row dating back to 1995, including a share of the title with FSU in 1999. Either Northwood or Ferris State have won the GLIAC Championship every year since 1982. The two schools shared the crown in 1982 before FSU had a 12-year run as the outright champion before the NU stretch.
Wednesday's win also gave the Bulldogs a perfect record at home this season as FSU capped off regular-season play in Big Rapids with an 8-0 home mark.
Ferris State jumped in front early by taking all three doubles contests, including a pair of close wins at the first and third flights in the lineup.
In singles action, the Panthers managed victories at the first and fourth flights, but FSU captured the other four to earn the win. A pair of the singles encounters went to third sets in the long evening showdown.
The Bulldogs will visit league newcomer Purdue Northwest on Friday for the regular-season finale starting at 10 a.m. (ET).
FSU then heads to Midland April 20-22 for the 2018 GLIAC Tournament with official pairings to be announced by the league office following the conclusion of regular-season play later this week.
