Ferris State's NCAA Tourney Run Ends In Midwest Regional Championship Match

Big Rapids, Mich. - Another great season for the Ferris State University men's tennis squad came to an end on Tuesday (May 1) as the Bulldogs fell to host Drury (Mo.) by a 5-2 score in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championship match in Springfield, Mo.

The Bulldogs, who had beat rival Northwood 5-1 in their NCAA opener on Monday, closed the year with a 21-3 overall record after falling in the round of 32.

The Panthers jumped out to a 2-1 lead following the doubles round and managed to win three of the first four completed singles flights to grab the win and move on to the D2 Sweet Sixteen. The setback denied the Bulldogs a third-straight trip to the national championship finals after back-to-back D2 Elite Eight finishes the last two years.

Despite losing their top two players entering the season, the Bulldogs made their 22nd all-time NCAA Tourney appearance this campaign under first-year head coach Daniel Hangstefer. The nationally 19th-ranked Bulldogs also won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular-season championship for the fourth-straight year and captured a third consecutive GLIAC Tournament title this season.

In the showdown against Drury at the Cooper Tennis Complex, FSU's 18-match win streak was halted by the 20th-ranked Panthers, who improved to 20-2 overall this year. FSU got an impressive 8-4 win from Steward Sell and Nur Adim Ramdani Iswan at the top doubles flight along with a 7-6, 7-5 victory by Pablo Munoz Baroja at the fourth singles spot.
