Ferris State Tennis Squads Earn Decisive Sweeps Over Aquinas In Home Opening Action

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis squads played their first home contests of the year on Friday (Feb. 4) with both teams notching identical 7-0 victories over visiting Aquinas at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.

The outings represented the first official regular-season dual action of the year as well for both as each started the year with a 1-0 mark.

The women's team started the day by taking the doubles point with wins at both of the top two flights and followed it up by sweeping the four contested singles flights. Both the third doubles position and the last two singles spots went to FSU by default as the Saints had only four available players.

Meanwhile, the men's team came back in the nightcap to sweep Aquinas, taking all three doubles flights in decisive fashion while registering six consecutive wins in singles play in straight-sets.

The closest doubles score in either match was 6-4 in FSU's favor with the tightest singles flight in the two contests still resulting in a 6-3, 6-4 Bulldog victory.

A total of nine different women's players factored into the team score with eight different men's competitors taking part.

"We played really solid today," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "Both teams came out strong both mentally and physically and it resulted in a couple of good wins to start the home season."

The Bulldogs are next slated to take the court on Saturday, Feb. 12, with both teams competing in regional action against Findlay in Ohio. The women's contest is set for a 2 p.m. (ET) start with the men's outing to follow at 5 p.m. (ET).

Both Ferris State teams are the defending Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Champions heading into the 2022 league slate.
