Ferris State Tennis Squads Head To GLIAC Tournament This Weekend Looking To Defend Titles

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis squads will take part in the 2022 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships this weekend in Midland.

The GLIAC Tournament will take place with action starting on Friday (April 29) and running thru Sunday (May 1) at the Greater Midland Tennis Center in Midland. Six teams will take part in both the men's and women's tournaments.

The Bulldog men have earned a first-round bye as the number two seed and will face either third-seeded Grand Valley State or sixth-seeded Lake Superior State on Saturday (April 30). The match will get underway at 10 a.m. (ET) outside or at 12 p.m. (ET) if played indoors. The winner advances to the championship match on Sunday slated to start at either 10 a.m. (ET) or if indoors at 9 a.m.

On the women's side, Ferris State is the number four seed and will take on fifth-seeded Lake Superior State in the quarterfinal-round starting on Friday at 3 p.m. (ET) outside or 6 p.m. (ET) if played indoors due to weather. With a win on Friday, the Bulldogs would face top-seeded Northwood in the semifinal round. The semifinals are on Saturday at either 3 p.m. (outside) or 5 p.m. (inside) with the title match on Sunday starting at 2 p.m. (outside or inside).

This year's event is a single-elimination tournament for both the men and the women with the winner of each tournament will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Tournament. Teams will play a "clinch-clinch" format, meaning that after the doubles point has been decided, any remaining doubles match shall be abandoned and the match will be stopped once a team reaches four points.

This year, for the first time, radio coverage of the GLIAC Tournament will be provided by radiotennis.com. The league also plans to video stream one back of courts each session, which will be free of charge. All links will be posted on the league's official tournament websites at the links below.

Both Ferris State squads enter the event as the defending GLIAC Tournament Champions from last spring. The Bulldog women hold a 10-7 overall mark this year and went 5-3 in conference regular-season action after winning their first conference tournament title since 2002 last year. Meanwhile, the men's team, which is ranked 23rd nationally, holds a 15-3 overall mark and placed second in the GLIAC with a 6-1 conference record. FSU's men's team has captured five tournament titles since 2012, including last season.
