Ferris State Tennis Squads Open GLIAC Play With Home Sweep Over LSSU

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis squads opened Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Friday (March 21) and earned a sweep over Lake Superior State inside the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.

The Bulldog women captured a close 4-3 triumph over the Lakers and the men followed with a 5-2 victory as both teams started league play with a win.

Ferris State fell behind in the women's contest as LSSU claimed the first and second flights in doubles play to grab the initial lead. The Bulldog tandem of Yara Madi and Aimee Reynoso posted a 6-4 win at three doubles.

However, in singles play, FSU came away with four of the six flights to garner the victory. Madi was a three-set winner at three singles while Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer posted a three-set triumph at four singles. Reynoso scored a 6-0, 6-1 win at the fifth flight and Katherine Earnest closed out the victory with the clinching win by a 6-2, 6-3 score at the sixth spot in the lineup.

In the men's contest, Lake Superior State took the doubles point. The Bulldog duo of Kevin Kovacs and Erik Kovacs scored a 6-3 win at the number one flight, but LSSU managed to win at both two and three doubles for the first point of the contest.

The Bulldogs fought back in singles play and won five of six flights. Kevin Kovacs was a winner at one singles while Alessandro Santangelo and Erik Kovacs each came away with three-set wins at two and three singles, respectively. FSU closed out singles play with straight-set wins from Jose Andres Perez Alarcon at the fifth spot and Adrian Catahan at six singles.

With the two wins, the Bulldog women now own a 6-5 overall record this year and the men are now 7-5 this season.

Both Ferris State teams will continue conference action at home next week, hosting Grand Valley State on Friday (March 28) and Davenport on Saturday (March 29) in Big Rapids.
