Ferris State Track & Field Breaks Two Facility Records & Registers An NCAA-Qualifying Mark At SVSU Invite
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed in the Saginaw Valley State "Jet's Pizza" Invitational held on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 30-31) at the SVSU Fieldhouse in University Center where the Bulldogs set a pair of facility records and recorded an NCAA Division II National Qualification mark.
The non-scoring event included participants from several institutions across the state and region, including FSU, Detroit, Oakland, Davenport, Aquinas, SVSU, Alma, Northwood and others.
FSU's Samantha Johnson headlined the Bulldogs' success as she won the women's mile run (4:59.65) while setting a new facility record and topping the NCAA Division II National Provisional qualifying standard.
The Bulldogs' Samantha Humphrey came in 11th in the 3,000 meters (10:32.74) while Emily Haynes placed 12th in the same race (10:35.38). Meanwhile, Ashley Hamilton came in 12th in the mile run (5:21.56).
Ferris State's "A" team of Humphrey, Molly Emerick, Hamilton and Alyssa Cummings earned runner-up honors in the women's distance medley relay (12:41.84) while the "B" squad of Jessica Delaney, Kayla Smith, Paige Koskinen and Haynes took third place (13:10.61) in the event.
In the women's weight throw, the Bulldogs had three of the top five place winners as Briana Raasio finished second (14.41m), Rache Long came in third (14.36m) and Maycee Robinson placed fifth (13.67m).
On the men's side, Ferris State set a new fieldhouse record with a clocking of 10:31.43 in the distance medley relay. The group of Logan Hammer, Josh Duggan, Ben Lentz and Lucas Copi placed first to win the race. The Bulldogs' "B" team of Spencer Gerber, Matt Crawford, Hunter Redman and Kyle Richardson finished fourth (10:46.40) in the event.
Ferris State's Damonta Madden came in third overall in the 60 meters (7.09) while teammate Antonio Agurs had the 10th fastest preliminary time (7.25) in the event. Madden also placed third in the 200 meters (22.42) with Agurs 15th (23.44) in the race. In addition, Agurs also placed 10th in the long jump (5.57m).
FSU's Richardson placed fifth in the 3,000 meters (8:44.36) with Lucas Copi 12th (8:58.68) in the same race.
Lentz came in 11th in the 400 meters (51.87) with Max Hodges 13th in the 800 meters (2:03.50).
The Bulldogs also had success in the throwing events as Ross Miller took fourth place in the shot put (14.87m) and Ryan Stankey was fifth (14.86m) in the event. Meanwhile, Austin Grant took seventh place in the weight throw (14.98m) and Miller was eighth (14.91m) with Brett Allpow taking 12th place (14.30m) and Tyler Satkowiak 13th (14.12m).
Ferris State will next compete in the Grand Valley State "Big Meet" on Feb. 13-14 in Allendale.
