Women 2nd, Men 4th At GLIAC Championships

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's cross country team placed second while the men came in fourth at the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships held on Saturday (Oct. 22) in Ashland, Ohio.

The Bulldog women, who are ranked first in the Midwest Region and third nationally, earned runner-up honors with 57 points behind champion Grand Valley State, which finished with 21 points in the 13-team field.  The Lakers entered the meet ranked seecond in the nation and also second in the region behind FSU after winning the NCAA Division II Championship last year.

Ferris State had the women's individual champion as senior Tina Muir clocked 21:18.60 in winning the 6K women's field by more than 20 seconds. The three-time All-American won the women's division featuring 119 runners.

Behind Muir, the Lakers took the next four spots en route to winning the team championship.  Sophomore Samantha Johnson, who has been the Bulldog's number two runner for the past two seasons, did not run at the GLIAC Championships.  

FSU's next highest finisher was junior Anna Rudd, who finished ninth overall in a time of 22:28.19.  Junior Alyssa Osika took 15th place (23:08.17) followed by junior Shelby Janutol in 16th place (23:19.13).

Freshman Kristie LeSage came in 23rd for FSU (23:35.15) with junior Felicia Slate taking 27th place (23:40.81).  Sophomore Brittany Anderson placed 34th Junior Jordan McGuire wound up 53rd (24:22.26) and freshman Kayla Smith was 76th (25:23.30).

The Lakers also captured the men's division with 17 points and were followed by Ashland (71), Wayne State (93) and FSU (119) in the top four overall.  GVSU's Anthony Witt was the individual champion (25:24.34) on the 8K course.

Junior Tyler Crossman paced FSU by finishing eighth overall (26:09.30).  Senior Alex Best was 27th (26:43.83), sophomore David Silversmith came in 28th (26:46.31) and junior Ryan Chute placed 29th (26:53.07).  Freshman Spencer Gerber was 32nd (26:56.02) with freshman Andrew Harper coming in 34th (26:58.03).

Senior Steve Neshkoff placed 43rd (27:12.53), freshman Charlton Craig came in 52nd (27:27.58), sophomore Bill King took 65th place (27:54.42) and sophomore Connor LaRowe wound up 77th (28:28.60) in the 117-runner division.

Ferris State will host the 2011 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships on Saturday, Nov. 5, at FSU's Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.
