Bulldog Men Fifth, Women Seventh At GLIAC Championships; Johnson Wins Individual Crown!

Houghton, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's cross country teams took part in the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships on Saturday (Oct. 26) in Houghton, Mich.

The annual event was hosted by Michigan Tech for the first time in 13 years at the Nordic Training Center on a cold and windy day.

The Bulldog men came in fifth overall at the league championships while the women's team took seventh place.

In addition, Ferris State also had the women's individual champion in junior Samantha Johnson, who won the women's 6K race in a time of 21:57.10.  Senior Anna Rudd came in 10th place overall for FSU.

The men's team was led by Spencer Gerber's 11th-place performance with senior David Silversmith placing 26th overall.

On the men's side, behind Gerber and Silversmith was Brandon Cushman for the Bulldogs in 28th place.  Bill King followed in 39th with Lucas Copi taking 46th, Logan Hammer 49th and Tyler Weedon coming in 76th in a competitive field.

Grand Valley State won the men's team title with Malone second and both Ashland and Hillsdale tying for third place in front of the Bulldogs among the 15 competing schools on the 8K course.

In the women's competition, Johnson and Rudd were followed by Emily Haynes for the Bulldog women. She placed 54th overall with Breeann Ovokaitys one spot back (55th) and Alyssa Cummings close behind (59th).  Finally, Jessica Delaney was 64th and Paige Koskinen 75th on the FSU side.

GVSU also won the women's title with Saginaw Valley State second and Malone third in the top three overall.

Along with the team championship races, both a men's and women's open race was also held.  Andrew Harper led the Bulldog contingent with a 14th-place performance and Douglas Hulbert came in 20th with Kyle Richardson 22nd and Connor LaRowe 23rd for Ferris State.

FSU had a pair of top 10 finishers in the women's open race as Natalie Perry came in eighth and Kayla Smith placed ninth overall.  Felicia Slate was 22nd, Jeanne Wilson finished 26th and Erika Roe 29th.

Ferris State will next take part in the 2013 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships on Saturday, Nov. 9, in Kenosha, Wis.
