Ferris' Stevenson Almost Perfect In 6-1 Game-Two Victory Over Hillsdale

Ferris State University pitcher Kayle Stevenson (Holland/West Ottawa) came up just one batter short of thowing a no hitter in Sunday's (April 11) second game against Hillsdale as the Bulldogs went on to a 6-1 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) victory at HC's Williams Field in Hillsdale, Mich.

Stevenson, who transferred to Ferris State from Hillsdale after the 2006 season, managed to hold Hillsdale hitless until the top of the sixth inning.  With one out, the Chargers' number five-hitter Kate Hoop drove a Stevenson pitch into left field for a single.  Prior to Hillsdale's only hit of the game, Stevenson held the Chargers in check with a bases on balls in the second inning and another walk in the third.  She concluded the game with nine strikeouts in improving her record to 5-6 this spring. 

While Kayle Stevenson was stellar in the pitching circle, Ferris State was productive at the plate as the Bulldogs racked up 11 base hits for the contest.  The senior southpaw would get all run supported needed in the bottom of the first as FSU scored twice on three hits.   The inning started with back-to-back leadoff singles by senior outfielder Rachel Wade (Canton) and freshman outfielder Morgan Kramerich (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport).  Both would score as sophomore third baseman Makenzi Peterson (Big Rapids) followed with two-run scoring double off Hillsdale thrower Brittany Hulett.

A RBI single by Morgan Kramerich in the second increased Ferris' lead to 3-0 before the Chargers were able to tally their lone score of the nightcap in the top of the third via a Bulldog error.  However, Ferris State was successful in building up its advantage at 5-1 thru the opening three frames with a two-run outburst on as many hits in the bottom half of the third inning.  Junior catcher Rachel Mueller (Santa Clarita, Calif./Valencia) drove a pitch with two outs beyond the center field fence for a two-run homer, her first of the year.

In the sixth inning, the Bulldogs would stretch their lead to five runs (6-1) as freshman second baseman Lainee Clay (Wheelersburg, Ohio) lead off with a double and proceeded to score on FSU's next batter, Rachel Wade's RBI single to center field.

For Ferris, Morgan Kramerich's three hits were tops while Rachel Mueller and Rachel Wade each generated two hits apiece.

Ferris State, which is now 15-10 overall and 6-3 in the conference, will host the Grand Valley State Lakers this Wednesday (April 14) in a GLIAC doubleheader at the FSU Softball Field in Big Rapids, Mich.  The first game is slated to get underway at 3:30 p.m. (EDT).  Digital Mammography Day will be held in conjunction with the contests as the activities during and between the games will help raise funds for Mecosta County Medical Center Foundation's digital mammography campaign.
