Ferris State Softball Downed 7-1 By Ashland

The Ferris State University softball team hoped to salvage a split in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader against Ashland this Sunday (March 27) afternoon, but the Eagles wouldn't have any part of it in tagging the Bulldogs with a 7-1 loss in the second game at Brookside Park in Ashland, Ohio.

The Eagles scored their seven runs on 12 hits while Ferris State tallied its lone run on eight hits, which included a 3-for-3 effort by senior catcher Rachel Mueller (Milford/Santa Clarita, Calif. Valencia) and two-hit performances from junior third baseman Makenzi Peterson (Big Rapids) and junior left fielder Stephanie Dusendang (Comstock Park/Rockford).

Ashland jumped on the scoreboard quickly with a run on one hit in the opening stanza thanks to starting pitcher Logan Hursey's run-scoring double.  The Eagles increased their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third by scoring twice on as many hits.  Hursey, who went 3-for-3 at the plate, struck again as she hammered a two-run shot over the center field fence.

Ferris State would net its only run of the contest in the bottom of third inning on a second wild pitch by Logan Hursey, which scored Stephanie Dusendang from third base.  With two outs, Dusendang and senior shortstop Lynsay Weaver (Bay City/All Saints) recorded back-to-back singles and both advanced a base following a Hursey wild pitch. 

A three-run output in the top of the fourth extended Ashland's lead to 6-1 as the Eagles utilized four hits and a Bulldog error.  AU added to its five-run lead in the fifth with three consecutive singles en route to producing a run while relief hurler Carly Clark (2-0) held Ferris State in check the final four innings to post the win.  Clark gave up just three hits while Logan Hursey threw the first three frames and fanned two Bulldog hitters.

Freshman Amy Dunleavy (Canton) was saddled with the loss for Ferris State as she pitched the first 3.1 innings.  Dunleavy (2-7) struck out two and walked three while scattering seven hits before being relieved by sophomore Emily Carlson (Wixom/Walled Lake Western), who issued five hits and one run (earned) in 3.2 innings of relief duty.

The Bulldogs, who fall to 6-12 overall and 3-3 in the GLIAC's North Division this campaign, host the Davenport Panthers this Tuesday (March 29) in their 2011 season home opener at Big Rapids, Mich.  The non-conference doubleheader opener will commence at 4 p.m. (EDT) with the second game to follow around 6 p.m. (EDT).
