Dana Bowler One-Hits Lake Superior State In Shutout Win

Video Highlights

Sophomore pitcher Dana Bowler (Lockport, Ill.) tossed a one hitter while the Ferris State University softball team scored all of its runs in a single inning to capture a 4-0 victory over Lake Superior State this Friday (April 8) afternoon in the opener of a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader at the FSU Varsity Softball Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

The GLIAC North Division contest represented Ferris State's first home appearance at the FSU Varsity Softball Field as its three previous home dates were either cancelled or moved to an alternate site.

Bowler gave up the only Lakers' base hit in the top of the sixth inning when leadoff batter Haleigh Edgar hit a flair over senior shortstop Lynsay Weaver's (Bay City/All Saints) head into shallow left field with two outs.  Bowler (6-5) maintained command in the pitching circle as she walked two LSSU batters while striking out one en route to a complete-game shutout.

Neither team was able to score until the bottom of the fifth inning when Ferris State snapped a scoreless tie with four runs on five hits in the frame.  Senior outfielder Colleen Roney (Wheaton, Ill./Glen Ellyn Glenbard South) belted the ball into the right centerfield gap for a triple with one out to jump start the Bulldog offense.  Junior third baseman Makenzi Peterson (Big Rapids) proceeded to score Roney with a RBI single up the middle.  With two outs, junior left fielder Stephanie Dusendang (Comstock Park/Rockford) connected on an offering from LSSU starting hurler Nicole Stein (0-4) and smacked a triple to right field which allowed Peterson to score the game's second run.  A single by Lynsay Weaver near the pitching circle accounted for another Ferris run while the final run of the inning occurred when senior catcher Rachel Mueller (Milford/Santa Clarita, Calif. Valencia) doubled into the right center field area to send Weaver home.

Makenzi Peterson along with Lynsay Weaver and Rachel Mueller all recorded a team-leading two hits apiece for Ferris State, which accumulated nine base hits for the game and left eight runners on base to the Lakers' four.

The victory improved the Bulldogs' overall record to 10-13 and 7-4 in the GLIAC's North Division to date this season.
