Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team suffered a pair of setbacks to open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Friday (March 23) afternoon against the Findlay Oilers in Ohio.
The Oilers took game one by a 6-4 score in eight innings and earned the sweep with a 10-4 triumph in game number two of the league-opening twinbill.
FSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening game after one inning, but the Oilers responded with four runs in the sixth before winning the contest with two in the eighth.
Senior first baseman Chelsea Morris had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs in the opener while senior Lindsey Pettit drove in two runs and had a homer for FSU. Catcher Liz Hamming also homered for the Bulldogs while Lainee Clay doubled in the game.
Dana Bowler pitched five and one-third innings for the Bulldogs while allowing four runs on four hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Emily Carlson pitched in relief and took the setback after giving up two runs on three hits. She struck out one and walked one.
Tawna Whited earned the win for the Oilers by hurling all eight innings. She gave up four runs on eight hits and posted four strikeouts to go with a walk. Carly Borders homered for teh Oilers and had three RBI"s at the plate.
In game two, the Oilers exploded for five runs in the seventh to beat FSU by a 10-4 score. UF started quickly with four runs in the first to go with one in the third before netting the five in the top of the final inning.
Ferris State could manage only four runs, which all came in the sixth inning.
Pettit homered again for the Bulldogs in game two and totaled two RBI's as did Morris, who doubled in the outing.
The Oilers hit four doubles and Carly Borders homered for Findlay in the nightcap. Grace Emmons earned the win by throwing five and one-third innings. FSU's Amy Dunleavy dropped to 3-2 overall this season with the setback after giving up eight hits and striking out four.
The Bulldogs are back in GLIAC play tomorrow (Saturday) as they visit Tiffin for a conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. (ET).
