Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team had to hit the road for its first home contests of the 2013 campaign, but the change in venue made little difference for the Bulldogs as they dominated the Lake Erie Storm in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Friday (March 29).
The Bulldogs earned a pair of five-inning victories over Lake Erie as FSU took game one 9-0 and game two 14-0 in decisive fashion. Both games were played at the new Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex on the campus of Davenport University in Caledonia, Mich.
The change in venue was made due to the weather conditions this winter, which made the Bulldogs' home field in Big Rapids unplayable for the weekend.
Ferris State adjusted well to the location change as senior pitcher Dana Bowler tossed the first perfect game in the history of Davenport's new complex, which officially opened this past week. She held the Storm without a base runner over the five innings as the Bulldogs sent all 15 Lake Erie batters in the contest back to the dugout.
The win marked Bowler's first career perfect game as well as she struck out eight batters and walked none in facing all 15 batters. She held the Storm hitless behind an impressive defensive performance by the Bulldogs.
FSU also found success at the plate in game one as the Bulldogs totaled 10 hits in the game. Ferris State scored a single run in the first inning and then broke the game open with six runs in the third and two more in the fourth. Lake Erie also aided the FSU effort with three errors in the field.
Junior Amy Dunleavy belted her second home run of the season and had two hits along with two runs and three RBI's to pace the Bulldog attack. FSU also received a pair of hits from senior Lindsey Pettit and shortstop Michelle Tononi while Alyssa Smith and Rachael Gabrielson both netted two RBI's apiece. Single hits went to Morgan Kramerich, Lainee Clay, Alex Wittman and Gabrielson with Clay scoring twice in addition to Dunleavy.
In addition to Dunleavy's home run, both Kramerich and Tononi doubled for the Bulldogs in the opening game. Lake Erie pitcher Dawn Ondercin struck out only a single Bulldog batter in the first game.
Ferris State picked up right where it left off in game two as the Bulldogs scored six runs in the top half of the first inning to build a commanding lead. FSU scored at least one run in all five innings of action as they totaled 12 hits in the game. It included two runs in the third, three in the fourth and two more in the fifth frame.
Dunleavey hurled all five innings of game two for the Bulldogs and allowed only five hits. She had three strikeouts and walked none.
In the nightcap, Ferris State received two runs each from Smith, Kramerich, Pettit, Dunleavy and Wittman. Wittman both doubled and tripled for the Bulldogs while FSU also received a triple from Pettit and doubles from Brittney Buti and Clay.
Wittman, Clay and senior Liz Hamming each had two RBI's in the second game and FSU received multiple hits from Pettit along with Wittman.
With the sweep, Ferris State improved to 11-7 overall and 4-2 in the GLIAC. Lake Erie fell to 2-10 overall and 2-2 in conference play with the setback.
Ferris State will host league newcomer Walsh University on Saturday (March 30) starting at 1 p.m. (ET) for game one with the second contest to follow. Both games will also be held at Davenport's Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex in Caledonia.
