Bulldog Softball Drops Two League Games At Northwood In Wednesday Action

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad dropped a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road contests on Wednesday (April 22) as the Bulldogs fell to Northwood in a league twinbill at Midland, Mich.

Northwood took the opener by a 9-1 score in five innings and then completed the sweep over FSU with a 14-5 triumph in the nightcap.

FSU was outhit 11-6 in the first game as Northwood struck for three runs in the first inning and six more in the bottom of the second frame. The Bulldogs' lone run came in the third.

In game one, Ferris State was led at the plate by shortstop Sarah Johnson and first baseman Kayti Carlson, who both had two hits each. Both Carlson and Bailey Darwin doubled for the Bulldogs.

On the Northwood side, Andria Gietl produced two hits and had three RBI's in the victory. NU's Maddison Sebald tossed a five-inning, complete game win after allowing only a single run on six hits with four strikeouts.

FSU's Sam Bates took the loss after giving up six runs on seven hits in one and one-third innings of action. Megan Vanderwal tossed the final two and two-thirds innings with three runs allowed on four hits.

In game two, the Timberwolves jumped out to a 4-2 lead after the opening inning of action. FSU trimmed the margin to a single run in the fifth before NU tallied 10 runs in the top of the seventh and then held off Ferris State in the bottom of the frame after FSU plated two runs.

Northwood totaled 15 hits in the nightcap to nine for Ferris State. NU's Vanessa Ewing received the win and allowed three runs on five hits with seven K's and four walks in four and one-third innings. Sebald threw the final two and two-thirds innings while giving up two runs on four hits.

FSU's Stacy Thompson pitched six and two-thirds innings with 12 runs allowed on 14 hits. She had four strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore Megan Hiler pitched the final out and gave up two runs on a single hit.

Johnson totaled three hits with both Emily Reed and Darwin producing two hits each. Johnson, Reed and Sydney Hasselbach all had a double with both Johnson and Reed netting two RBI's apiece.

Northwood was led at the plate by Jennifer Wontorcik, who tallied five RBI's on two hits. A total of seven NU batters registered two hits on the night in the game.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Friday (April 24) as they visit Hillsdale for a league twinbill beginning at 3:30 p.m. (ET) for game one and game two starting at 5:30 p.m. (ET).
