Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team recorded its third sweep in the Sunshine State as the Bulldogs rolled to a pair of non-league wins over Cedarville (Ohio) and Nyack at The Spring Games on Friday (March 4) in Clermont.
The Bulldogs, who were coming off their first day off since traveling to Florida last weekend, got back in action in a big way as FSU topped the Yellow Jackets by a 7-1 score in the opener before posting a decisive 10-1 victory against Nyack in the nightcap.
With the two wins, FSU is now 8-2 overall to date this season.
In the first game of the day against Cedarville, the Bulldogs scored three times in the first and two more in the second while jumping out to an early lead. FSU tacked on two more runs in the fourth to build a 7-0 advantage and gave up only a run in the fifth to account for the final margin.
FSU outhit Cedarville 10-9 for the contest with Alyssa Smith, Michelle Tononi and Emily Reed all posting multiple hits. Reed had two doubles while Smith homered in the victory. Both Smith and Tononi had two RBI's and Reed chipped in with one overall.
Senior Stacy Thompson moved to 4-0 this season in the circle with the victory as she allowed only a single run on nine hits with two strikeouts in seven innings of work. Cedarville's Morgan Arbogast took the loss with seven runs and nine hits allowed in four innings of action.
In game two, the Bulldogs scored seven runs in the second inning en route to the decisive victory, which went only five innings.
Third baseman Bailey Darwin led FSU with two hits while Smith, Alexx Astorga, Casey Bias, Tononi and Jacki Stone all had one apiece. Astorga totaled four RBI's with two coming from Smith in the triumph.
FSU held a 7-1 edge in total hits and posted four doubles along with a grand slam from Astorga.
Megan VanderWal picked up the victory for Ferris State with only a single hit and run allowed in four innings on four strikeouts. Megan Jean pitched in relief and allowed no runs on no hits in one inning of work and tossed two K's.
The Bulldogs will play another doubleheader on Saturday (March 5) as FSU squares off against GLIAC rival Lake Superior State in non-league play at 3 p.m. (ET) followed by a tilt against Shippensburg (Pa.) starting at 5 p.m. (ET).
