Bulldog Softball Sweeps SVSU To Stay Perfect In GLIAC Action

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team kept its momentum going as the Bulldogs swept Saginaw Valley State in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader on Tuesday (March 29) in University Center, Mich.

FSU won an exciting 5-4 contest in eight innings in the opener and capped the sweep with a 5-0 shutout victory in game two to improve to 6-0 in the GLIAC and 21-9 overall this campaign.

In the opener, FSU scored once in the seventh to knot the game up and then pulled out the win by scoring in the eighth inning to beat SVSU despite being outhit 7-5 for the game.

Megan Jean hurled seven innings for the Bulldogs and allowed only four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts before Megan Vanderwal came on to pitch a single scoreless inning with no hits allowed for the Bulldogs.

Both Emily Reed and Bailey Darwin had RBI's for FSU and Casey Bias tallied two hits in the victory for Ferris State. FSU scored the winning run in the eighth as Alyssa SMith scored on a throwing error by the Cardinals.

In game two, Vanderwal earned the win by tossing three shutout innings with only four hits given up. Hannah Leppek also didn't allow a run on two hits.

Senior Michelle Tononi posted three RBI's for Ferris State with both Stephanie Neuman and Alexx Astorga driving in a single run apiece. Emily Reed notched two hits as did Bailey Darwin in the win.

Ferris State scored four runs in the sixth to break the game open in the nightcap and outhit SVSU 7-6 for the game.

With the two setbacks, the Cardinals dropped to 16-8 overall and 2-4 in league play.

Ferris State will visit West Michigan rival Grand Valley State for a GLIAC showdown on Sunday (April 3) with first pitch for game one of the twinbill set for 12 p.m. (ET) in Allendale.
