Bulldog Softball Splits Twinbill At The Spring Games For Third-Straight Day

Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University softball registered its third-straight split as action continued on Tuesday (March 6) at The Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.

The Bulldogs won an 8-4 decision against St. Cloud State (Minn.) in the morning opener before falling to regional foe Lewis (Ill.) for the second time in a 9-1 decision.

Ferris State opened the day by putting three runs on the board in the first inning versus the Huskies before adding two more in the third to build a five-run lead. St. Cloud State scored three times in the fifth to close the gap, but FSU responded with three of its own in the sixth to help seal the win.

FSU pounded out eight hits in the victory, including two apiece from left fielder Emily Smith and first baseman Sarah Meredith. Both Smith and Kodi Ramirez tripled for FSU with Lexi Hongisto and Lexi Summers both registering home runs in the triumph. Ramirez and Hongisto had two RBI's each.

Senior Sam bates hurled four innings and allowed only a single run on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk to earn the victory. Hannah Leppek got the save by pitching three innings with four hits and three runs allowed to go with a K and a walk.

In game two, though, the Bulldogs got off to a slow start as Lewis put four runs on the board in the first before adding five more in the sixth to claim the win. FSU had a single run in the second as the Flyers outhit FSU 16-3 for the game.

Meredith homered for the Bulldogs and had two hits with centerfielder Jacki Stone adding one more in the setback.

FSU's Abby Highway suffered the loss with seven runs given up on 13 hits before Katie Ross hurled two-thirds of an inning, surrendering two runs on three hits.

The Bulldogs, who are now 3-3 on the spring trip, have Wednesday off before returning to the diamond against Saint Anselm and the New York Institute of Technology on Thursday (March 8) at 2 p.m. (ET) and 4:30 p.m. (ET), respectively.
