Ferris State Returns To Action At Home With League Setback To Davenport

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad returned to its home field on Wednesday (April 11), but came out on the short end of a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contests against the Davenport Panthers at the FSU Softball Field.

The Panthers registered a 4-1 win in the opener and then beat FSU 8-2 in the nightcap while earning the road sweep.

In the opener, DU opened the game with a solo homer in the first inning before Ferris State responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame to knot the game back up. The score stood until the fourth when Davenport notched a three-run homer, which accounted for the final scoring in the game. Overall, DU had eight hits to four for the Bulldogs and also benefited from three FSU errors.

Senior leftfielder Emily Smith notched a pair of hits in the opener for the Bulldogs with sophomore first baseman Sarah Meredith notching FSU's lone RBI. Senior catcher Emily Reed and centerfielder Paige Kortz both added hits for the Bulldogs.

In the circle, senior pitcher Sam Bates hurled all seven innings and allowed four runs on eight hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Mallory Teunissen notched her 15th win this year for DU by giving up only a single run on four hits with 14 K's.

Davenport got off to a quick start in game two as the Panthers struck for a single run in the second and three more in the third in building an early 4-0 edge. They added four more in the top of the fifth before FSU finally got on the board in the bottom of the inning. The Bulldogs tacked on another run in their final at-bat in the seventh, but could get no closer.

In the nightcap, Ferris State was outhit 14-8, but got two hits from shortstop Kodi Ramirez. Both Reed and third baseman Lexi Hongisto doubled and each drove in a run for the Bulldogs. Additionally, FSU got hits from rightfielder Jacki Stone along with second baseman Logan Fleming, Smith and Kortz in the setback.

FSU's Abby Highway got the start in the circle and allowed seven runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings of action. Hannah Leppek came on in relief and gave up only a single run on three hits with two K's and a walk in just over two innings. Ellie Muilenburg picked up the win for the Panthers, giving up two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

Ferris State is slated to continue its league homestand in Big Rapids on Saturday (April 14) as FSU hosts West Michigan rival Grand Valley State the FSU Softball Field. First pitch for game one is set for 2 p.m. (ET) with game two to follow at 4 p.m. (ET).
