Ferris State Softball Earns Big Home Sweep Over Wayne State

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad notched a pair of big home wins on Friday (April 20) as FSU swept Wayne State at the FSU Softball Field in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

The Bulldogs scored a 5-3 win in the opener before coming back to win game two in extra innings on a walk-off double.

In game one, the Bulldogs pounded out 10 hits to eight for WSU and built a 5-1 lead after four innings before holding off the Warriors for the win.

Senior Emily Reed notched three hits and drove in three runs at the plate while first baseman Sarah Meredith added a pair of hits as did centerfielder Paige Kortz. Both Reed and shortstop Kodi Ramirez doubled for the Bulldogs.

Meanwhile, FSU's Abby Highway tossed seven innings and gave up only three runs on eight hits with a strikeout and a walk.

In game two, the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead into the third before the Warriors tallied a tying run in the fourth. Both teams then netted a single run in the seventh before the Bulldogs sealed the win in the extra frame with a walk-off double from third baseman Lexi Hongisto. Overall, FSU had nine hits to seven for WSU in the nightcap.

The Bulldogs got multiple hit games from Hongisto along with Ramirez and Katie Scheuer. Both Scheuer and Hongisto drove in two runs each. Scheuer homered in the win.

Senior Sam Bates threw all eight innings in game two and allowed only three runs on seven hits with a strikeout and no walks.

The Bulldogs will continue their homestand on Saturday (April 21) against Saginaw Valley State at the FSU Softball Field. First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m. (ET) with game two to follow at 3 p.m. (ET).

Saturday's twinbill will also represent FSU's annual Senior Day with the Bulldogs slated to honor their senior class between games.
