Ferris State Completes Weekend Sweep With Back-To-Back Senior Day Victories

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad capped off an unbeaten weekend as FSU stretched its winning streak to four-straight games with a sweep over Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (April 21) at the FSU Softball Field in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs, who swept Wayne State to open a six-game homestand on Friday, came back on Saturday with back-to-back wins over SVSU in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

Ferris State won the opener via a 3-0 shutout before rallying for a 4-2 win in the nightcap. The sweep came on Senior Day as FSU honored six seniors between the two-game league set, including Sam Bates, Emily Smith, Katie Scheuer, Emily Reed, Lexee Summers and Hannah Leppek.

In the opener, Ferris State scored once in the third and added two more runs in the fifth while totaling nine hits to only three for SVSU.

The Bulldogs got three hits from centerfielder Paige Kortz in game one along with RBI's from Reed, sophomore first baseman Sarah Meredith and junior second baseman Logan Fleming. Reed doubled and Smith had a sacrifice in the win.

Sophomore hurler Abby Highway pitched all seven innings in earning the win, allowing only three hits with two strikeouts and two walks in the shutout victory for her seventh win this campaign.

Saginaw Valley State, which had won two games against the Bulldogs in a league twinbill in University Center only two weeks ago, took the early advantage in game two with a single run in both the third and fourth innings.

However, the Bulldogs rallied in the bottom of the sixth as Summers and Kodi Ramirez both tallied back-to-back RBI doubles following by an RBI single from Scheuer in totaling four runs on four hits to gain the lead. From there, FSU held the Cardinals scoreless in the seventh to garner the victory.

Kortz, Summers and Ramirez all tallied two hits in game two with Summers driving in two runs. She doubled as did Ramirez in the triumph.

Bates pitched game two for the Bulldogs and went all seven innings in the circle, giving up only two runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout for the victory.

Ferris State wraps up the six-game homestand on Tuesday (April 24) as FSU hosts the Tiffin Dragons in a league twinbill at the FSU Softball Field. Game one begins at 1 p.m. (ET) with game two to follow at approximately 3 p.m. (ET).
