Ferris State Softball Win Streak Snapped In Midland Against Northwood

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad had its six-game win streak come to an end on Wednesday (April 25) as the Bulldogs suffered a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) setbacks to the Northwood Timberwolves in Midland.

The Timberwolves rallied for a 4-3 win in the opener before pulling out a 12-4 triumph in six innings in game two against FSU. The Bulldogs had won six consecutive games, all of which were at home, prior to the twinbill.

In the opener, Northwood scored twice in the second, but Ferris State responded with a three-run third inning to grab the lead. NU tied it up in the third then got the go-ahead run in the fourth and held FSU off the board the rest of the way.

Ferris State, which was outhit 9-6 for the contest, got doubles from catcher Emily Reed and rightfielder Katie Scheuer while second baseman Logan Fleming homered and accounted for all three FSU RBI's in the tilt.

Sophomore Abby Highway pitched game one for the Bulldogs and gave up four runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks in six innings of work.

In game two, Ferris State got off to a quick start by scoring four runs in the top of the first. However, NU responded with a big inning of its own as the Timberwolves tallied five runs in the bottom of the frame to move in front. From there, Northwood held FSU scoreless and added a single run in the third along with two more in both the fifth and sixth to put the game away.

The two teams combined for 21 hits in the nightcap with NU holding a 14-7 edge. The Timberwolves also benefited from four Bulldog errors in the field.

Offensively, the Bulldogs got hits from seven different batters with first baseman Sarah Meredith homering and driving in three runs. Reed also had an RBI while leftfielder Emily Smith and designated player Lexee Summers doubled.

Senior Sam Bates tossed five innings for the Bulldogs with Katie Ross pitching two-thirds of an inning. Bates surrendered 10 runs, of which six were earned, along with 12 hits. Meanwhile, Ross allowed two runs on two hits.

The Bulldogs will remain on the road for their next four games as they visit Ashland (Ohio) on Friday (April 27) for a league twinbill starting at 3 p.m. (ET) for game one. FSU then visits Wayne State on Saturday (April 28) before returning home for their final two regular-season tilts against Purdue Northwest on Sunday (April 29).
