Ferris State Softball Battles Nationally-Ranked GVSU In Doubleheader On Thursday

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad battled nationally-ranked Grand Valley State on Thursday (April 25) in a pair of tightly-contested Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheaders at the GVSU Softball Field in Allendale, but fell short by scores of 5-0 and 3-0 to the Lakers.

The host Lakers scored three runs in the first inning of game one and added two more in the fourth while limiting FSU to only four total hits in the shutout win.

In the opener, Bulldog sophomore second baseman Kodi Ramirez led the FSU offense with two hits while both Kylie Winkels and Kaitlyn Orme had a hit apiece. Orme doubled in the game.

The Bulldogs' pitching rotation of Kaitlyn Nugent, Connor Proctor and Abby Highway combined to allow five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

In game two, the two squads battled thru three scoreless innings before the Lakers accounted for the only runs with one in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Both teams finished with seven hits overall.

Both Ramirez and centerfielder Paige Kortz tallied two hits apiece for FSU. Third baseman Lexi Hongisto along with Winkels and catcher Rebecca Piron also each had a hit.

Highway threw four and one-third innings for the Bulldogs with three runs allowed on six hits with three strikeouts. Meanwhile, Proctor tossed one and two-thirds innings, giving up no runs on one hit with three K's and a walk.

The Bulldogs will wrap up the regular-season back at home on Saturday (April 27) starting at 12 p.m. (ET) against Northwood at the FSU Softball Field. It will mark FSU's Senior Day games with the Bulldogs slated to honor this year's senior class as part of the afternoon twinbill.
