Bulldog Softball Closes Out Regular-Season With Senior Day Split Versus Northwood

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad celebrated Senior Day and closed out the regular-season with a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) split against the Northwood Timberwolves on Saturday (April 27) at the FSU Softball Field in Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs took the opener in walk-off fashion by an 8-7 score in nine innings in game one before the Timberwolves came back to notch a 9-4 triumph in game two. The two games represented the final regular-season outings for the Bulldogs.

FSU honored the senior trio of catcher Rebecca Piron along with shortstop Logan Fleming and third baseman Lexi Hongisto as part of their final home action.

In game one, the Bulldogs and Timberwolves battled back and forth to extra innings. After FSU took an early 2-0 edge, Northwood built a 5-2 advantage before the Bulldogs responded with four runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined. NU got the tying run in the seventh and took a one-run lead in the ninth, but the Bulldogs answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to earn the win.

The victory came on a walk-off single from first baseman Kaitlyn Orme, who finished with two RBI's and two hits in the victory. Second baseman Kodi Ramirez had a game-high four hits while centerfielder Paige Kortz totaled three hits and Fleming added two as did designated player Sawyer Wightman. Fleming tripled while Ramirez had a pair of doubles and Wightman added one in the game.

The pitching combination of Kaitlyn Nugent, Connor Proctor and Abby Highway combined to allow seven runs on 13 hits with five strikeouts and four walks in the victory.

In game two, the Timberwolves held a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth when FSU took a 4-2 edge with a three-run frame. However, Northwood totaled seven runs in the fifth to account for the final margin as the Timberwolves outhit Ferris State 16-10 in the outing.

Kortz totaled three hits in the nightcap while Fleming, Ramirez and Piron all ahd two apiece for the Bulldogs. Both Ramirez and Piron earned doubles and triples in the setback.

The Bulldogs utilized the same trio of pitchers in game two and together they gave up nine runs on 16 hits with two K's and one walk.

Ferris State will be the number eight seed for the GLIAC Tournament May 3-5 at Sports Force Parks in Sandusky, Ohio. The Bulldogs are slated to face top-seeded Grand Valley State in the opener on Friday at 10 a.m. (ET) in the double-elimination league tournament.
