Bulldog Softball Garners Thursday Split At The Spring Games In Florida

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad battled to a split in non-league action at The Spring Games on Thursday (March 10) in Florida.

The Bulldogs dropped a 6-3 decision to Assumption in the opener before coming back for a 3-2 victory against Upper Iowa in game two.

In the first contest, the Bulldogs were outhit 9-5 as Assumption put two runs on the board in the first and three more in the third along with one in the fifth in building a 6-0 edge. FSU produced three runs to cut the margin in half in the sixth, but could get no closer in the setback.

Sawyer Wightman had two hits to lead the Bulldogs at the plate while Kylie Winkels notched two RBI's and Kodi Ramirez had one. Winkels also doubled in the game.

Senior Abby Highway threw all six frames for the Bulldogs and gave up five runs on nine hits with two strikeouts.

The second game was a different story, however, as the Bulldogs outhit Upper Iowa 7-4 for the day. FSU scored once in the first and two more times in the second while UIU managed only a single run in both the first and final innings of the outing.

Ramirez and Taylor Buiter each had two hits for Ferris State while Winkels, Buiter and Evelyn Blood all drove in runs. Winkels homered with both Buiter and Ali Magiera doubling in the game.

Connor Proctor tossed six and two-thirds of an inning, allowing two runs on four hits with five K's and a walk. Kaitlyn Nugent pitched one-third of an inning, giving up no runs and no hits.

Ferris State is slated to close out its Florida trip on Friday (March 13) with a pair of games against Bridgeport and Bemidji State at 10 a.m. (ET) and 12:15 p.m. (ET), respectively, in Winter Haven, Fla.
