Bulldogs Split Twinbill With Wayne State

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team split its doubleheader with a 4-2 win in game one and a 3-2 loss in game two to Wayne State on Saturday (April 3) at the FSU Softball Field in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

In game one, the Warriors jumped out to a two run lead in the top of the third inning. Ferris State responded in the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore Justice Ruggles doubled in senior centerfielder Paige Kortz to cut the lead in half. Junior catcher Ali Magiera slapped a double down to even the score at two apiece, driving in Ruggles for a 2-2 score.

Two innings later, redshirt freshman third baseman Amara Zukowski singled to centerfield for the game-winning run, scoring Kortz from second base. Freshman Abby Mitchell doubled to right center later in the inning to score freshman pinch runner Josie Prince for the 4-2 final.

In the circle, freshman pitcher Aryn Gallacher earned her first collegiate win. Gallacher struck out a pair, gave up six hits and allowed two runs on 76 pitches, facing all 29 Wayne State batters in the first game.

The Warriors rebounded for a 3-2 win in game two, boosted by a fourth inning home run to left center field off the bat of Bryanna Kressler. WSU's Rainey Psenicka singled in the winning run in the top of the fifth inning.

For Ferris State, Kortz scored on a wild pitch, while junior first baseman Kaitlyn Orme drove in the only RBI in game two for the Bulldogs on a single down the left field line. Sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Nugent navigated four and two-thirds innings, and allowed three earned runs on five hits with one walk. Sophomore pitcher Kristie Gray went two and a third innings in relief and blanked the Warriors.

Ferris State improved to 8-8 on the season with the split, and travels next to take on the Parkside Rangers on Wednesday (April 7) at 3 p.m. (ET) and 5 p.m. (ET) in GLIAC action in Kenosha, Wis.
