Ferris State Softball Posts Seventh Win In Last Eight Outings And Remains Perfect In Florida

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team picked up its third consecutive win and seventh in its last eight outings on Sunday (March 6) as the Bulldogs notched a 8-7 victory over Walsh in eight innings at The Spring Games near Orlando.

The Bulldogs, who were originally slated to play a pair of games in day two action at the Sunshine State, had their schedule altered due to an umpire shortage, but still found a way to pull out a win. With the triumph, FSU is now 3-0 overall thru two days of competition in Florida.

In Sunday's lone game, the Cavaliers struck first with a pair of runs in both the first and second innings, building a 4-0 lead that stood up until the fifth. In the fifth inning, FSU cut the margin in half with two runs and the Bulldogs then claimed the advantage with five runs in the sixth. However, Walsh answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth and forced extra innings.

Ferris State eventually found the winning run in the top of the eighth and held off WU in the bottom of the frame for the victory. Both teams finished with seven hits each.

FSU got two hits from second baseman Josie Prince, who also drove in two runs. Center fielder Paige Kortz added three RBI's on a hit and scored twice with right fielder Kylie Winkels posting two RBI's as well. Fellow outfielder Abby Mitchell had a hit and scored twice.

In the win, Kortz along with Winkels and Mitchell all doubled for FSU.

The Bulldogs utilized three different pitchers in the game with the combination of Mckenzie Cleland, Kristina Baar and Aryn Gallacher combining to allow only a single earned run on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Baar got the win, improving to 2-1 on the year.

With the victory, Ferris State improved to 8-5 overall this season.

The Bulldogs are slated to face regional foe Cedarville on Monday (March 7) at 1:30 p.m. (ET) before taking on Southern Indiana at 6 p.m. (ET) in Winter Haven.
