Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad opened its annual spring break trip to Florida with a sweep on Wednesday (March 12) as the Bulldogs recorded back-to-back wins in day one play at the USSSA Space Coast Spring Games in Melbourne.
Ferris State topped Goldey-Beacom by a 4-0 score in the opener before closing the day with a 3-2 regional win over Thomas More in the nightcap. With the two wins, the Bulldogs are now 7-5 overall this year and have six of their last eight outings to date this campaign.
In the opener, the Bulldogs tallied seven hits and limited the Lightning to only two in the shutout victory. FSU tallied two runs in the second with one in the third and one in the sixth en route to the win.
FSU's seven hits in game one came from seven different players. Outfielder Maddie Gkekas produced a double for FSU while Jadyn Joseph, Jayden Marlatt and Brooklyn Verbeek joined Gkekas with an RBI.
In the circle, Ella Covill-Marter earned her third win of the year by tossing a shutout. She had five strikeouts and no walks in going the distance.
In game two, the Bulldogs and Saints both came up with eight hits. However, Ferris State put runs on the board in the second, fifth and sixth innings while limiting Thomas More to a single run in the first and one final run in the bottom of the seventh.
Marlatt was the lone Bulldog player to register multiple hits in game two, finishing with two, including a triple. Joseph, Verbeek and Breanna Blair all had doubles while Joseph and Verbeek each drove in a run and Abby Meyer had a sacrifice for the Bulldogs.
FSU's Catherine O'Donohue claimed the win for the Bulldogs with a single earned run allowed on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk in six innings. Cecelia Bell claimed her second save of the year by giving up a lone run on two hits in one inning.
Ferris State will play a pair of games on Thursday (March 13) versus New Haven and D'Youville at 10 a.m. (ET) and 2:30 p.m. (ET), respectively.
