Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad started postseason play in impressive fashion on Thursday (May 1) as the Bulldogs rolled to a 8-1 victory over Roosevelt in their opening game of the 2025 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont, Ill.
The Bulldogs scored three runs in the first inning and tacked on four more in the second frame while cruising to the decisive win in postseason action.
With the win, Ferris State advances into the winner's bracket and the third-seeded Bulldogs will next take on second-seeded rival Grand Valley State in day two play on Friday (May 2) afternoon at 2:30 p.m. (ET).
Ferris State tallied six hits in the game one victory while limiting RU to only four hits in the contest. After FSU's opening 7-0 edge in the second inning, both teams scored a single run in the fifth to close out the scoring.
Sophomore Cecilia Bell claimed her 10th win of the year for the Bulldogs in the pitching circle, tossing four innings and allowing no earned runs and only two hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Catherine O'Donohue tossed one-third of an innning, giving up a single run on two hits before Ella Covill-Marter came on for the final two and two-thirds innings while allowing no runs or hits with one strikeout.
FSU's six total hits came from six different batters in the game. Left fielder Maddie Gkekas had the lone extra-base hit with a triple and added an RBI as did first baseman Alexis Kozlowski, third baseman Brooklyn Verbeek and catcher Emily Killion. Designated player Abby Meyer and second baseman Jadyn Joseph along with right fielder Ella McDonald each posted a hit as well.
Additionally, both Meyer and Kozlowski notched a sacrifice in the game for the Bulldogs while Joseph stole a base and Kozlowski had two steals.
The winner of Friday's matchup between the Bulldogs and the Lakers will advance to Saturday's competition while the loser will then play an elimination game on Friday at 5 p.m. (ET).
Ferris State, which was ranked sixth this week in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Rankings, also kept its national tournament hopes alive with the win.
