GVSU Women Top Ferris In GLIAC Play

Allendale, Mich. - Rival Grand Valley State proved to be too much for the Ferris State University women's basketball team on Monday (Jan. 11) evening as the host Lakers topped the Bulldogs by a 64-41 count inside the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.

The Lakers broke open a close game in the latter stages of the opening half en route to a 33-20 halftime edge and outscored FSU 31-21 over the final 20 minutes of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game between the two West Michigan rivals.

GVSU forced 20 BUlldog turnovers and grabbed 22 offensive rebounds in the victory, which broke FSU's two-game winning streak.  The Lakers also limited FSU to only 33.3% (15-45) shooting on the night.

Elizabeth Van Tiflin paced a balanced Laker attack with 12 points while Briauna Taylor chipped in with 11 points.

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs were led by sophomore guard Tricia Principe's game-high 13 points.  She was the lone FSU player to reach double-figure scoring.

GVSU connected on 26-of-65 (40%) field goal tries and was seven-of-23 (30.4%) beyond the three-point line.  The Lakers also made five-of-seven (71.4%) free throws.

On the other end, FSU hit only three-of-17 (17.6%) three's and was eight-of-13 (61.5%) at the free throw stripe.  The Bulldogs also shot only 29.2% (7-24) from the floor in the first half of action.

The Lakers outscored FSU 34-12 in the paint and 29-10 in points off turnovers along with a 22-10 advantage in second chance scoring.

Ferris finished with 20 turnovers to go with seven steals, seven assists and two blocked shots.  The Lakers netted 12 assists, 12 steals and a single block while turning the ball over 14 times.

The victory was the seventh-straight home triumph this campaign for GVSU.

FSU continues its five-game GLIAC road swing by visiting Tiffin on Thursday (Jan. 14) for a 6 p.m. (EST) league tilt in Tiffin, Ohio.  The Bulldogs then play at Ashland on Saturday (Jan. 16) with tipoff set for 1 p.m. (EST) at Ashland, Ohio.

Bulldog Bites:  The game featured four lead changes and the score was tied three times ....... The Bulldogs played only eight players in the game while GVSU had 11 players see action ...... Principe added eight rebounds to go with her 13 points and reached double-figure scoring for the eighth time in the last nine contests ........ The loss snapped a two-game Bulldog winning streak in Allendale ...... GVSU improved to 52-24 all-time versus FSU with the victory .... Freshman forward Katy Fox and junior forward Tiara Adams both chipped in seven points for FSU ..... The lead changed hands four times in the game.
