League Unbeaten Lakers Top FSU Women

Big Rapids, Mich. – Visiting Lake Superior State proved why it is unbeaten in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play as the Lakers beat Ferris State 73-56 in women's league action on Thursday (Jan. 6) night at FSU's Jim Wink Arena.

The Lakers moved to 8-3 overall and 5-0 in the GLIAC after winning the conference road game.  FSU dropped to 6-7 overall and 2-5 in the league following its first GLIAC tilt in nearly three weeks.

Lake Superior State bolted out to a double-digit lead midway thru the first half and held a 43-29 advantage at halftime.  They increased their edge to 23 points with 15:46 to play and the Bulldogs could never get closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

LSSU forced 16 Bulldog turnovers and shot 45.6% (26-57) from the floor in notching the victory.  They were 17-of-31 (54.8%) in the first half and made nine three-pointers (9-22) in the contest compared to only three for FSU.

The Bulldogs made 21-of-51 (41.2%) field goal tries and hit 11-of-15 (73.3%) free throws to go with three-of-14 (21.4%) from downtown.  LSSU was nine-of-22 (40.9%) beyond the arc and 12-of-16 (75%) at the line.

Senior guard Emily Joseph led the way for the Lakers with a game-high 28 points on eight-of-10 shooting from both the field and the line.  She also made four-of-five three pointers and added six rebounds, three assists and two steals in an all-around effort.

Joseph was joined in double-digits by Maria Blazejewski with 13 points and Nicole Marshall, who netted 11 points.  Ronlea Peterson dished out nine assists to go with seven points.

The Bulldogs had two players reach double-figures with both senior forward Tiara Adams (Lansing/Waverly) and junior guard Kelsey DeNoyelles (Mt. Pleasant/Sacred Heart) totaling 13 points apiece. Adams reached double-figures for the 12th time in 13 contests this season while DeNoyelles posted her fifth game with 10 or more points this year.

The Lakers outrebounded Ferris 33-30 for the game on the strength of 13 offensive boards and they held an 11-8 edge in second chance scoring.  Additionally, they outscored FSU 15-11 in points off turnovers as they finished with only 11 miscues.

LSSU also had 19 assists to go with 10 steals and a single block in comparison to FSU's 16 assists, six steals and three blocks.  Junior guard Tricia Principe (Kalamazoo/Mattawan) had a team-best five assists for the Bulldogs.

The win was LSSU's 15th in the last 22 series' meetings and the Lakers improved to 49-33 all-time against the Bulldogs.

Ferris State hits the road this Saturday, Jan. 8, to face Saginaw Valley State in GLIAC play at University Center, Mich.  Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.  (ET) inside SVSU's Ryder Center and a live FSU broadcast via Ustream will be available at www.ferrisstatebulldogs.com.

FSU won't be back at home for two weeks when they host Michigan Tech in conference play on Thursday, Jan. 20, at Wink Arena.  FSU will also face Northern Michigan the same weekend in Big Rapids on Saturday, Jan. 22, for a league contest.
