Bulldogs Pick Up First Win Under Lamoreaux-Tate At Louisville Tourney

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad picked up its first victory of the 2012-13 campaign and earned the first win under new head coach Colleen Lamoreaux-Tate with a 62-58 triumph over Kentucky State in the consolation game at the United Electric Tip-Off Classic on Saturday (Nov. 10) evening in Louisville, Ky.

FSU, which suffered a 59-51 setback to Cedarville (Ohio) in the opening game of the event on Friday night, bounced back from its season-opening defeat to top the Thorobrettes at Bellarmine University's Knights Hall.

Ferris State received 16 points each from both junior guard Sarah DeShone and sophomore forward Christina Branch in earning the victory to improve to 1-1 on the year.  DeShone made seven-of-14 shots from the floor while Branch was six-of-eight overall for the night in the win.

The Bulldogs shot 41.5% for the game and hit 15-of-24 (62.5%) free throws while limiting Kentucky State to only 31.7% shooting, including a four-of-17 (23.5%) figure behind the three-point arc.  KSU made 14-of-20 (70%) free throws in the contest.

Besides DeShone and Branch, the Bulldogs also received 11 points off the bench from redshirt freshman guard Katie Mavis in addition to eight points from junior forward Ashley Rando.  

FSU owned a 43-41 rebounding edge despite giving up 14 offensive caroms and the Bulldogs totaled 18 turnovers to 17 for Kentucky State.

DeShone led the Bulldogs on the glass with six rebounds while sophomore center Hannah Hoffman had six and both Branch and Caitlin Carmody chipped in with five each.  

In addition to her 16 points and eight rebounds, DeShone also dished out a game-high seven assists for the Bulldogs in the victory.

Kentucky State was led by Jasmine Davis' game-high 21 points and Style Harper contributed 10 points in the setback as KSU dropped to 0-2 overall on the season.

Ferris State built a 12-point lead with 6:42 to go in the first half before Kentucky State responded with a run to grab a 29-28 halftime edge.  However, FSU outscored KSU by five points in the final half to notch the win.

The Bulldogs will be back in action next Saturday, Nov. 17, as they travel to Indianapolis for a non-conference game against the Greyhounds starting at 1 p.m. (ET).
