Ferris State Drops League Home Contest To Hillsdale At Wink Arena

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball had its two-game winning streak snapped as the Bulldogs fell to Hillsdale 79-75 on Saturday (Jan. 4) afternoon inside FSU's Jim Wink Arena.

With the setback, the Bulldogs fell to 3-5 overall and 3-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) while Hillsdale improved to 3-7 overall along with 2-4 in the conference standings.

Ferris State jumped in front early by nine points only nine minutes into the game before the Chargers battled back to build a 39-29 halftime advantage.  FSU outscored the Chargers 46-40 in the second frame, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs fell short against the Chargers.

Hillsdale pushed its 10-point halftime lead to 15 points only six minutes into the second half and led by the same margin with 10 minutes to go in the contest. FSU fought back and tied up the game on a three-point play from sophomore guard Dena Droste with six minutes to go.

Ferris State scored the next six-straight points to build a 68-62 edge with 4:55 remaining, but Hillsdale rallied back and grabbed the lead on a layup in the paint by Sarah Theut with 1:48 left in the contest. The two teams traded leads again before HC's Kelsey Cromer drilled a three-pointer from the corner with 36 seconds to go to give the Chargers a 75-73 lead.

The Bulldogs turned the ball over following Cromer's three-pointer and Madison Berry knocked down two free throws to make it a four-point game with 19 seconds left. Another FSU turnover forced the Bulldogs to foul and Megan Fogt hit back-to-back free throws before Ferris State's Katie Mavis accounted for the final margin with a jumper as time expired.

The game featured nine lead changes and was tied three times as the two teams battled back and forth in the league contest.

Ferris State was led by Mavis' 18 points and she added three assists along with eight steals. Senior guard Sarah DeShone added 16 points while sophomore center Christina Branch tallied 12 points and seven boards before fouling out of the contest down the strech.  FSU also received 11 points off the bench from sophomore guard Destiny Robinson.

The Bulldogs shot 45% for the night and made three-of-12 (25%) three's along with 18-of-27 (66.7%) free throws.

On the Hillsdale side, Cromer finished with a game-high 19 points with Fogt adding 16 points and 15 rebounds. Berry chipped in with 16 points in the Charger win.

Hillsdale finished by making 25-of-61 (41%) tries from the floor along with nine-of-23 (39.1%) attempts from long range and 20-of-29 (69%) free throws.

The Chargers owned a 45-36 rebounding edge and tallied 16 offensive boards to 11 for the Bulldogs, which resulted in a 20-12 Hillsdale advantage in second chance production.

While the Bulldogs totaled 19 turnovers, including two in the final 30 seconds, the Chargers also struggled to take care of the ball as they had 23 miscues.  FSU came away with 15 steals to nine for Hillsdale as a result of the turnovers, which led to a 18-6 Bulldog edge in fast break scoring.

Both teams finished with 14 assists and two blocked shots each. Aslyn Landherr posted a game-high four assists for Hillsdale with DeShone and Mavis both notching three each for Ferris State. FSU outscored the chargers 40-24 in the paint and totaled 33 points off the bench to 20 for Hillsdale.
