Fast Start Leads Host Gorillas Past Bulldogs In Pitt State Classic Opener

Big Rapids, Mich. - A hot start led host Pitsburg State to a 77-50 triumph over Ferris State in women's basketball action on Friday (Nov. 18) night at the Pitt State Classic in Pittsburg, Kan.

The host Gorillas outscored the Bulldogs 26-5 in the opening quarter and built a 39-13 halftime lead in improving to 3-0 this season. FSU dropped to 0-3 with the setback.

Mikaela Burgess led four Pittsburg State players in double-figures with a game-high 20 points in the contest. They also received 13 points from Elena Flott along with 11 each by Hadyn Herlocker and Shelby Lopez.

Junior forward Rachel McInerney paced FSU with 10 points in the setback while the Bulldogs also received eight points from freshman guard Renee Sturm.

Overall, Ferris State shot 43.6% from the floor, but had 26 turnovers in the loss. FSU went two-of-eight (25%) from three-point range and 14-of-22 (63.6%) at the free throw line.

The Bulldogs totaled 29 rebounds and came away with six steals in addition to five assists.

The Gorillas shot 42% from the floor and also connected on 14 three's as they shot 36.8% (14-38) from long range along with five-of-seven (71.4%) at the free throw stripe. They finished with 39 boards and compiled 15 steals and 18 assists in the win.

The Bulldogs will wrap up the Pitt State Classic as they square off against Central Missouri on Saturday (Nov. 19) with tipoff set for 2 p.m. (ET) in Pittsburg, Kan.
