Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball team utilized a big third quarter of action and defeated the Lake Superior State Lakers by a 75-59 count on Sunday (Jan. 28) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play at FSU's Jim Wink Arena.
The game went back and forth in the opening half with the lead changing hands nine times before FSU grabbed a 34-30 halftime edge.
However, the Bulldogs took control early in the third quarter of action and outscored the Lakers 33-12 in the frame en route to the decisive win while improving to 11-9 overall and 5-7 in the GLIAC.
Senior forward Rachel McInerney led the Bulldogs with 18 points, seven rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals while sophomore forward Lilly George added 13 points and seven boards in the victory. Junior guard Alexis Bush tallied 10 points and four rebounds with four assists.
Ferris State converted 28-of-64 (43.8%) field goals overall, including a 60% figure in the third quarter alone. FSU went five-of-19 (26.3%) from three-point range and made 14-of-22 (63.6%) free throws in the win.
The Lakers, meanwhile, made 47.8% (22-46) of their field goals, 30% (3-10) of their three's, and 60% (17-20) of their free throws in the loss.
Lake Superior State was led by Abigail Ostman, who finished with 14 points. Tamara Novic added 13 points.
The Bulldogs outrebounded LSSU 38-31 for the game and hauled in 16 offensive rebounds while outscoring the Lakers 20-2 on the offensive glass.
FSU also forced 29 turnovers and totaled 32 points off miscues to only 19 for the Lakers despite finishing with 22 of their own.
The Bulldogs distributed 19 assists and came up with 19 steals while also blocking four shots compared to LSSU's 18 assists, nine steals and two blocks. Ferris State outscored the Lakers 40-26 in the paint.
George and senior guard Leah Humes both had three steals for the Bulldogs.
Lake Superior State fell to 1-16 overall and 0-12 in the GLIAC with the loss.
Ferris State will host Northwood in GLIAC play on Thursday, Feb. 1, starting at 7:30 p.m. (ET) before wrapping up its three-game homestand against Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Feb. 2) at 3 p.m. (ET) inside Wink Arena.
