Early Start Leads Michigan Tech Past Ferris State In GLIAC Women's Basketball Tilt

Big Rapids, Mich. - Visiting Michigan Tech was too much for the Ferris State University women's basketball squad on Friday (Jan. 29) as the Huskies jumped in front early and posted a 66-51 triumph over FSU at Jim Wink Arena.

The two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division counterparts opened the weekend in Big Rapids with MTU improving to 7-1 overall on the year. The Huskies extended their win streak to five-straight games and snapped FSU's two-game win streak in the process.

Michigan Tech shot 40.3% from the floor and limited FSU to only 34.4% shooting en route to the win. The Huskies also made seven three's, going seven-of-19 (36.8%) beyond the arc, in addition to forcing 15 Bulldog turnovers.

Ferris State got 12 points and eight rebounds from freshman guard Kadyn Blanchard along with 11 points from freshman guard DeShonna Day. Sophomore guard Mallory McCartney added 10 points, five assists and four rebounds in the setback as FSU fell to 3-5 overall.

The Huskies were led by Ellie Mackay, who totaled a game-high 17 points. Sara Dax added 10 points off the bench in a balanced effort for the league-leading Huskies.

The Bulldogs made only three-of-14 (21.4%) three's and went six-of-nine (66.7%) at the free throw line. Meanwhile, Michigan Tech sank five-of-seven (71.4%) free throws.

Michigan Tech owned a 44-40 rebounding margin and the Huskies got 26 points off the bench compared to eight for the Bulldogs. FSU had seven steals and four blocks with the Huskies recording nine steals and seven blocks in addition to 21 assists.

The two teams will square off again on Saturday (Jan. 30) with tipoff set for 4 p.m. (ET) inside Wink Arena. The game will be carried live by Sunny 97.3 FM and the Bulldog Sports Network with live audio and video coverage also available at FerrisStateBulldogs.com.
