Visiting Roosevelt Knocks Off Ferris State In GLIAC Women's Basketball Matchup

Postgame Interview & Highlights Video

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad fell to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) newcomer Roosevelt University on Monday (Feb. 3) night in league action at FSU's Jim Wink Arena.

In the Lakers' first-ever visit to Big Rapids, they jumped out to a 33-24 lead after the opening 10 minutes of action and held on down the stretch for the 10-point win, avenging an earlier season defeat to Ferris State in Chicago.

The Lakers forced 22 Bulldog turnovers and came away with 13 offensive boards while knocking down 12-of-38 (31.6%) three's in the victory. They also held FSU to only 26.1% shooting from the outside as the Bulldogs six-of-23 from the three-point arc.

After the Lakers took a nine-point lead after the first period, FSU trimmed the margin back to four at halftime. However, the Lakers ended up outscoring Ferris State by three points in each of the final two periods to close out the win.

Roosevelt got a team-high 27 points from Luka Malinka, who went six-of-11 from deep, along with 22 points by Lexie Sinclair, who knocked down four treys. Jayla Turchin added 20 points and 11 rebounds in a double-double effort.

Their performances helped offset a game-high showing from Bulldog junior Mya Hiram, who netted 28 points and eight rebounds in 28 minutes of action. The trio of senior Kenzie Bowers along with juniors Mia Riley and Elle Irwin all had 11 points apiece. Bowers added nine assists and eight rebounds in a near triple-double effort.

The Bulldogs shot 48.5% overall from the floor, but only shot three free throws in the game. RU shot 42.9% from the field and finished 11-of-13 (84.6%) at the foul stripe.

With the setback, the Bulldogs fell to 15-6 overall and 9-3 in the GLIAC. Roosevelt improved to 7-11 overall and 5-7 in conference action.

Ferris State will look to get back on track this Thursday (Feb. 6) night as FSU visits Davenport for a 5:30 p.m. (ET) contest in Caledonia. The Bulldogs then take on nationally top-ranked rival Grand Valley State on Saturday (Feb. 8) in Allendale beginning at 1 p.m. (ET).
