Ferris State Women's Golf In Seventh Place After NCAA Regional Opening Round

The Ferris State University women's golf team started off action at the 2010 NCAA Division II Super Regional One this Sunday (May 2) with a 40-over-par 328 team score and is currently in seventh place following the opening round at the par-72 Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Mo.

The Bulldogs trail Drury (Mo.) by nine strokes for sixth place while Grand Valley State is tops among the nine team participating with a first-place 304-stroke total (+16).  California (Pa.) is in second place after producing a 308 score (+20) and trails GVSU by four strokes.  Indianapolis (309, +21) is in third place and Ashland (316, +28) occupies fourth place.

Freshman Ashley Swanson (Flushing/Flint Powers Catholic Central) carded a team-best 78 score (+6) and is one of eight individuals currently tied for 12th place.

Sophomore Erin Fuchik (Tulsa, Okla./Bishop Kelley) registered a 79-stroke total (+7) in the first round and is in a 20th-place tie to date.  Sophomore Blaize Baumgartner (Perry) turned in an 85 score (+13), which is good for 40th place.

Sophomores Brooke Rodes (Traverse City/West) and Bryce Hetchler (Clinton Township/Fraser) are tied for 41st and 43rd place honors, respectively.  Rodes netted an 86-stroke total (+14) while Hetchler shot an 87 (+15) through 18 holes of play.

Ferris State will begin the second round this Monday (May 3) morning.  The Bulldogs will seek to climb up the leaderboard to secure a spot at the 2010 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships (May 12-15) in Mesa, Ariz.

The Bulldogs, under head coach Mike Mignano, are midst their ninth consecutive appearance at regionals.

The top three teams along with the top three individuals not affiliated with a team from each super regional will advance to the championships.
