Amy Smith Signs With FSU Women's Golf

Ferris State University women's golf head coach Mike Mignano has announced Amy Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) will attend and play women's golf for the Bulldogs, beginning with the 2009-10 fall season.

"We're so fortunate to have a person of such high character and positive attitude join our team," said Mignano, who embarks on his third season at Ferris State for the 2009-10 campaign. "Amy is one of those golfers who will work hard and undoubtedly become a strong leader for the Bulldogs. She's a Bulldog in every sense of the word - dedication, commitment, and positive attitude.

"Amy dealt with a serious wrist injury during most of her senior season, but fought through it and supported her teammates regardless of her cirumstances. She will be a strong team player for us and we look forward to her help in us competing for a national championship," added Mignano.

Smith averaged 43.0 strokes per round during her senior year in 2008 at Sycamore High School despite being sidelined almost all of the season due to an injury. Despite the injury, Smith was a repeat recipient of the team's Most Valuable Player Award in 2008 after claiming the honor in the 2007 season. As a junior in 2007, she registered a 44.0 stroke average en route to earning All-Southwest Ohio Second-Team honors and district all-star honorable mention laurels under head coach Dr. Keith Brackenridge. In her 2006 sophomore campaign, Smith netted a 48.0 stroke average while landing a spot on both the all-conference and league all-academic teams.

As a four-year varsity letterwinner, Smith helped lead SHS to three consecutive sectional appearances in her initial three seasons and a district tourney finish as a senior.

Besides golf, Smith participated two seasons on the school's junior varsity lacrosse team.

Smith was also active in SHS' Student Athletic Leadership Team (S.A.L.T.) all four years and was a three-year member of the Female Athletic Group. She was tabbed as her senior class' "Miss Sycamore" honoree and graduated this spring 2009.

The daughter of Jeff and Paula Smith of Cincinnati, Ohio, Amy plans to pursue a marketing/professional golf management degree at Ferris State.

Smith joins Ashley Swanson (Flint, /Powers Catholic Central) as current members of the 2008-09 Bulldog women's golf recruiting class.

Ferris State wrapped up another highly-successful season by placing tied for sixth place at the 2009 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships (May 13-16) in Findlay, Ohio. The Bulldogs, who finished 10th nationally in the final 2008-09 Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Women's Golf Coaches' Poll, made their sixth consecutive national tournament appearance this past 2008-09 season and ninth in the program's all-time history.
