Women's Golf Moves Up Into Fifth After Regional's Second Round

The Ferris State University women's golf team climbed two places into fifth following this Monday's (May 2) second-round action at the 2011 NCAA Division II Super Regional One in Belle Vernon, Pa.

Ferris State, which is the tourney's seventh seed, improved its team score by 17 strokes in second-round competition as the Bulldogs have recorded a two-round 663 team score (+87) on the par 72, Cedarbrook Golf Gold Course.  FSU registered an opening-round 340 score in Sunday's (May 1) action in what marked the Bulldogs' 10th consecutive regional tournament appearance.  The Bulldogs are presently within seven strokes of Ashland (656, +80) for fourth place and 10 strokes in back of third-place Drury (653, +77).

Top-seeded Grand Valley State maintained its hold on first place for the second straight day with a 637 team score (+61) and leads second-place California, Pa. (644, +68) by seven strokes among the nine participating teams in the tournament.

Leading the way for Ferris State is freshman Jacqueline DeBoer (Grand Rapids/South Christian), who's now tied for sixth place with a 158 score (81-77=158, +14).  The 2011 All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) First-Team pick and GLIAC Freshman of the Year moved up three places following second-round play and trails leader Dianne Luke of California (Pa.) by five strokes.

Junior Erin Fuchik (Tulsa, Okla./Bishop Kelley) turned in a second-round 80-stroke total to climb 10 places into a tie for 21st place with a 166 score (86-80=166, +22).  Fellow junior Brooke Rodes' (Traverse City/West) 167-stroke total (84-83=167, +23) puts her into a two-way tie for 25th-place honors.

Freshman Emily Rohdy (Farwell) is seven strokes behind Rodes with a 174 (91-83=174, +30), which is deserving of 38th place.  Rohdy entered the second round in the 45th-place position.  Junior Blaize Baumgartner (Perry) has posted an 182 (89-93=182, +38) on her scorecard which is worthy of a 47th-place tie.

This Tuesday's (May 3) final round action on the links gets underway at 7:30 a.m. (EDT).  Complete coverage and live statistics for the final round is available at this link.

The top three teams along with the top three individual golfers not affiliated with a team from each super regional will advance to the 2011 NCAA-II Women's Golf Championships, which are slated for May 8-13 in Allendale, Mich.

A season ago (May 2-4), Ferris State placed seventh at the 2010 NCAA-II Super Regional One in Springfield, Mo., with a three-round 969 team score (328-322-319=969, +105).
