Ferris State Women's Golf Wraps Up Action In Mary Fossum Invitational At MSU

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team wrapped up weekend action by placing 11th in the annual Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State University on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 12-13) in East Lansing, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who were one of only two non-NCAA Division I schools in the 12-team field, shot a three-round total of 985 overall on the Forest Akers East Golf Course for a +121 finish. FSU posted a first round 320 score followed by rounds of 328 in the second and 337 in the third.

The tournament was won by Notre Dame with a 887 figure followed by Michigan State (901), Toledo (902), Tulane (909) and Western Michigan (920) in the top five overall. FSU placed 25 strokes ahead of 12th-place finisher Central Michigan on the par 72 course measuring 6,334 yards.

For Ferris State, freshman Destiny Lawson led the way as she shared 30th overall on rounds of 75, 80 and 79 for a 234 (+18) finish. It represented one of the highest individual finishes ever for a Bulldog golfer in the event.

Another newcomer, Sydney Murphy, came in next in 59th place at 249 (+33). She posted a 82 in the first round before carding an 84 in the second 18 holes of play along with an 83 in the last round.

Senior Libby Berens placed 60th overall with a 251 total (+35). After firing a first-round 79, she posted rounds of 83 and 89 over the final 36 holes of competition.

Sophomore Gianna Dela Cruz was right behind Berens in a share of 61st place at 253 for the 54 holes. She shot 84, 81 and 88.

Finally, junior Kelsey McKinley came in 65th at 258 (+42) with scores of 87, 84 and 87, respectively.

Ferris State is next back in action on Sept. 26-27 at the Grand Valley State Invitational to be held at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale.
