Ferris State Women's Golf Places Third In "Battle In Belmont"

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team concluded its fall campaign by coming in third overall in the "Battle In Belmont" hosted by Davenport University at Blythefield Country Club on Sunday and Monday (Oct. 25-26) in Belmont, Mich.

The Bulldogs carded a two-round total of 655 overall with a 326 team score in Sunday's opening 18 holes of action followed by a 329 figure in Monday's final round. 

A total of seven schools took part in the event with Grand Valley State posting a 624 followed by Michigan State at 632 in front of the Bulldogs. FSU finished 30 strokes in front of fourth-place finisher Davenport, which carded a 685 total. Aquinas (697), Northern Michigan (726) and Grace (808) also competed in the tourney.

The Bulldogs were led by junior Jordan Duvall, who shot a 160 to finish eighth overall in the field. She shot back-to-back rounds of 80 each day.

Freshman Destiny Lawson came in only a stroke behind Duvall with a 161 total, which was good for a share of ninth place. She posted a 79 in the first round followed by a 82 in round two.

Bulldog junior Kelsey McKinley tied for 16th place in the field at 166 on rounds of 84 and 82 Sunday and Monday, respectively. Next in line was senior Libby Berens in a share of 19th place as she posted a 168 total with scores of 83 and 85 over the two days of action.

Sophomore Gina Dela Cruz placed 27th with a 172 figure as she shot identical rounds of 86 each day.

The Bulldogs also had three players compete as individuals in the competition with freshman Sydney Murphy placing tied for 14th overall at 165 on rounds of 84 and 81. FSU sophomore Morgan Zloto finished tied for 23rd with a 171 as she shot a first-round 82 followed by a 89 in the second round. Finally, sophomore Sirinporn Phakamad was 34th at 183 with a 95 in the first 18 holes before coming back with an 88 over the final round.

Ferris State's third-place team finish represented its highest showing of the fall campaign. FSU will resume the 2015-16 season in the spring.
