Ferris State Improves By 13 Strokes In Final Round To Place Sixth At NC4K Classic

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team improved by 13 strokes in the final round and finished with a sixth-place team performance at the NC4K College Classic, which concluded on Monday (April 4) in Blacklick, Ohio.

The Bulldogs shot 345 in Sunday's opening round before coming back to notch a 332 over the final 18 holes of competition to card a 677 total for the two rounds of action.

The event helped raise over $3,000 for Nellie's Champions for Kids (NC4K), an organization that supports children with pediatric cancer.

A total of 19 teams took part in the two-day event and each team had to battle the elements. Monday's final round started with temperatures in the mid-50's and rain, but by late morning it dropped to the 30's with overcast skies and stiff winds.

Freshman Destiny Lawson paced the Bulldogs as she finished among the top 20 individuals overall in a share of 18th place with a 165 total. She shot a first-round 85 before coming back with an 80 in the final round.

Another freshman, Sydney Murphy, was next in line for FSU with a 171 score, which was good for 34th place overall. Murphy fired an 85 on Sunday and an 86 in Monday's final round.

Senior Libby Berens and junior Kelsey McKinley both tied for 35th overall at 172 as each finished only a stroke behind Murphy. Berens posted a 93 in the first round, but bettered her score by 14 strokes with a 79 in the final round.

Meanwhile, McKinley notched scores of 85 on Sunday and 87 on Monday.

Finally, sophomore Sirinporn Phakamad placed 74th in the field at 184 on rounds of 90 and 94 for the two days, respectively.

Another Bulldog sophomore, Morgan Zloto, also competed as an individual and shared 48th place with a 176 total on rounds of 87 and 89 for the two days of action.

The annual event was hosted by Ohio Dominican University and included teams from across the region and nearby institutions.

Ferris State next heads to the Trine Spring Classic on Friday and Saturday, April 8-9, in Angola, Ind. FSU will also have members competing in the Bowling Green Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, April 9-10, in Bowling Green, Ohio.
