Ferris State's Alayna Eldred Opens NCAA East Regional Action In Tie For 10th Place Monday

Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University sophomore golfer Alayna Eldred (Osakis, Minn.) had a strong showing in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Women's Golf East Regional on Monday (May 3), shooting a four-over par 76 at the Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.

Eldred, who is among four individual qualifiers along with nine teams competing in the East Region Championships, currently sits tied for 10th overall after round one of the NCAA event and is only four shots off the lead.

A total of 15 golfers carded a 76 or better over the opening 18 holes of action on the par 72 course measuring in at 6,181 yards. A trio of golfers each shot even-par 72 and own the day one lead, including Emma Thomgren of Missouri-St. Louis, Findlay's Jill Schmitmeyer and Cailyn Henderson of Indianapolis.

The regional event is being hosted by the University of Indianapolis and round two is scheduled for Tuesday (May 4) with the final round on Wednesday (May 5).

Overall, a total of 48 golfers are in the field and all participants will compete through the 54 holes of competition. The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a team from each regional will advance to the national championships, which are slated to take place May 11-15 at TPC Michigan in Dearborn.

An All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) First Team honoree this year, Eldred is the first Bulldog women's golfer to compete in the NCAA Regional Championships since Destiny Lawson placed 14th overall at the East Region Championships in 2017.

This season, Eldred took sixth place overall at the 2021 GLIAC Championships held April 16-17 in Augusta, Mich.

Eldred is slated to tee off in round two on Tuesday at 10:20 a.m. (ET) on hole one.
