
NATIONALS BOUND! Ferris State Women's Golf Advances To NCAA D2 National Championships For First Time In 16 Years
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team punched its ticket to the NCAA Division II National Championships for the first time in 16 years with an impressive final-round performance in the D2 East Regional on Wednesday (May 7) in Allendale.
The Bulldogs climbed the leaderboard on the final day of the regional event, moving up from eighth place overall to third with a season-best round of six-over par 294 at The Meadows Golf Course.
By virtue of the top-five finish, the Bulldogs will now move on to the D2 National Championships set for May 13-17 in Boulder City, Nevada, marking FSU's first trip to the finals since 2009.
The 18-team regional was won by host Grand Valley State at 880 overall followed by Findlay (891) and FSU (923) in the top three. Indianapolis took fourth place (926) and Missouri-St. Louis was fifth (929) in the advancing slots.
After carding scores of 316 in round one and 313 in round two, the Bulldogs fired a 294 in the last round and moved past five other schools to place third.
FSU was led by Kamryn Shannon, who finished tied for seventh individually with a 223 figure. She shot a 73 in the last round after starting the 54-hole tournament with a 76 on Monday and a 74 on Tuesday.
Behind Shannon was Lizzie Anderson in 19th place overall. Anderson finished with a 231 total thanks in part to a strong 72 in the last round. She had opened with an 82 and came back with a 77 in round two.
The Bulldogs' Susie Gietl placed 23rd overall at 233 for the three rounds, shooting a 74 in the last round following her scores of 79 and 80 in rounds one and two, respectively.
Meanwhile, Ashley Thomasma came in tied for 35th overall with a 237 score, notching a 79 in round one and a 83 in round two before closing with a 75 in Wednesday's 18 holes of play.
Finally, Taylor Musselman competed in the final round for the Bulldogs and shot an 87, taking the place of Kylie Walker, who had carded scores of 81 on Monday and 82 on Tuesday.
All participants competed through the 54 holes of competition with the top five teams from the East Region along with the top two individuals not on an advancing team moving on to the national championships at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Nevada.
The trip to the national championships will represent FSU's 10th overall and first since finishing sixth in 2009.
