FSU Battles Third-Ranked Pirates To Double Overtime Tie

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team battled nationally third-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State to a scoreless double overtime tie on Sunday (Sept. 2) to wrap up action in the 2012 Grand Valley State Kickoff Tournament at Allendale, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who fell to Indianapolis by a 3-2 score in a double overtime contest to open the season on Friday afternoon (Aug. 31) at the GVSU event, received nine saves from junior goalkeeper Rachel McCollum in holding one of the nation's top teams scoreless in the 110-minute contest.

Meanwhile, Armstrong Atlantic State's Maggie Carson managed four saves in also holding the Bulldogs without a goal as neither squad could find the back of the net.

AASU finished with 17 shots, including nine on goal with the Bulldogs totaling eight shots and four on net.  The contest also featured 15 fouls against the Pirates with FSU whistled for 11 on the day.

Seven of Armstrong Atlantic State's shots came in the first half as they held a 7-2 edge in total attempts over Ferris State at the break.  They also held a decisive 9-2 margin over the Bulldogs in the second half, but Ferris State had four of the five total shot attempts in the two overtimes.

In the second overtime, the Bulldogs had a ball roll into the net after the keeper and a FSU player collided, but the goal was waved off.  FSU also had a nice cross in the first overtime that bent towards the goal, but the Armstrong Atlantic State keeper was able to pick it up.

Additionally, the Bulldogs had a corner kick opportunity with two minutes to play in double overtime, but were not able to convert.

Freshman Casey Shauman paced the Bulldogs with four shot attempts, including two on goal.  Both Taylor DiCicco and Kelsey Aubil also had a shot on net.  Meanwhile, Morgan Mitchell led the Pirates with four shots and two on goal.

The contest also included a total of three yellow cards with two being charged to Armstrong Atlantic State.

AASU was ranked third nationally in the preseason poll and is a unanimous pick to win the Peach Belt Conference after finishing 18-3-3 overall a season ago and reaching the NCAA National Semifinals.

The Bulldogs (0-1-1) will return to action on Friday, Sept. 7, with a 3 p.m. (ET) non-league match against Madonna in Livonia, Mich.
