Bulldogs Drop Regular-Season Home Finale On Senior Day
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team battled Michigan Tech even for much of the way, but came out on the short end of a 2-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) decision in the Bulldogs' regular-season home finale on Sunday (Oct. 21) at the FSU Soccer Field.
The two teams were scoreless at halftime before Michigan Tech finally recorded the first goal of the contest in the 62nd minute and added another in the 79th minute to account for the final margin.
Michigan Tech, which entered the game second in the GLIAC standings, received two goals from Lindsey Van Rooy in notching the victory. Her first came at 62:54 unassisted on a loose ball in front of the net on a breakaway.
The second goal occurred at 79:33 when Van Rooy notched her second marker of the afternoon off an opposite side pass from Katie Boardman.
The physical matchup featured a total of 23 fouls called between the two teams as MTU was credited with 12 and the Bulldogs had 11 on the day.
Overall, the Huskies held a 18-11 edge in total shots with 12 in the first half and six more in the second frame. FSU had eight in the opening stanza and three in the final period. MTU held an 11-8 edge in shots on goal. Both teams also had three corner kick tries.
Michigan Tech goalkeeper Jenna Phelps played all 90 minutes in net and made eight saves in earning the win while FSU's Maddie Haustein stopped nine shots in going the distance.
Freshman Casey Shauman paced FSU with four shots and all four came on goal while Van Rooy tallied six shots with five on net for the Huskies.
Ferris State honored three seniors prior to the contest in Kelsey Aubil, Logan DeClercq and Hillary Procunier prior to their final home matches in Big Rapids.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 6-6-3 overall and 5-4-2 in conference play. Meanwhile, Michigan Tech is now 11-3-1 overall and 9-1-1 in the GLIAC.
The Bulldogs have two regular-season matches remaining in league action next weekend. FSU will visit Notre Dame (Ohio) on Friday, Oct. 26, for a 4 p.m. (ET) conference tilt followed by a visit to Lake Erie on Sunday, Oct. 28, with match time set for 12 p.m. (ET).
