Women's Soccer Falls In Battle Of GLIAC Leaders On The Road

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team squared off against nationally top-ranked Grand Valley State in a battle of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (GLIAC) leaders on Saturday (Oct. 12) night, but dropped a 6-0 decision in Allendale.

The Lakers, who have not allowed a goal all season, improved to 10-0-1 overall and 7-0 in league play while FSU fell to 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the GLIAC.

Grand Valley State struck for five goals in the first half in seizing control of the match.  The Lakers opened the scoring only 18:54 into the contest on Autumn Jacobs' first goal of the year as her shot from the top of the box found the back of the net.

GVSU added a second goal at 28:52 of the opening frame when Marti Corby notched her third goal of the year off a Shelby Humphries assist to push the lead to two goals.

The lead grew to 4-0 as the Lakers scored twice within a minute span in the 36th and 37th minutes of the first half.  Both goals came from Kendra Stauffer off assists from Michelle Foote and Katy Woolley, respectively.

The final Laker goal of the opening half came at 41:07 as Katie Klunder notched her second marker of the year from Humphries.

In the second half, the Lakers tallied the only goal as Alyssa Wesley scored her first goal of the season off a Woolley assist.

GVSU outshot the Bulldogs 36-3 for the contest and held a 4-1 edge in corner kick tries.  The Bulldogs totaled seven fouls to five for GVSU.

Both Rachel McCollum and Savanna Wojtanowksi totaled seven saves each for the Bulldogs as each played a single half.  Abbey Miller went the distance for Grand Valley State and made a single save.

Ferris State will host Northwood in non-league play on Tuesday (Oct. 15) at home starting at 4 p.m. (ET) in Big Rapids.
